Licensed in 1977 in Neumunster, Capitol I began his breeding career in Ostholstein, later moving on to Dithmarschen.  A large crop of his offspring became highly successful in sport and breeding. Famous names like Calato, Campesino, Carolus I and II, Carthago Z, Cassini, Colino, and Cento defended their sire's honour in show jumping. In Belgium the Capitol I descendant Canadian River is making headlines, while Indoctro is his most famous get in The Netherlands.  Capitol I is the paternal great grandsire of the stallion Candillo Junior.

In my recent trip to Germany I had the pleasure of meeting Capitol I's full sister, U-Capitola.  I was in the middle of a field with the most incredible assembly of Holsteiner mares I have ever seen with their owner Harm Thormahlen.  I picked my favourite mare and it turned out to be his favourite mare, a daughter of U-Capitola by Landgraf.  I picked my second favourite and it was U-Capitola.  U-Capitola then proceeded to come and visit me and requested I scratch her back.  Up to this point I did not know who this mare was.  As I was scratching her Mr. Thormahlen casually let me know she was the full sister to Capitol I.  I was in horse heaven.  I will never forget the honour of scratching the withers of the full sister to Capitol I......  what an honour.

Calletto II

The Holsteiner stallion Caletto II amazingly only stood for FOUR seasons prior to dying from an unfortunate accident.  Caletto II was acclaimed Champion of his stallion licensing in 1980. He was considered to be the perfect Holsteiner type. He also showed wonderful jumping technique, and later proved this in the show jumping ring with Herbert Bloeker, where the stallion won many tests for riding horses. At a regional show in September 1984, after being proclaimed best in the show, Caletto II was waiting to go into the arena, when he reared up, fell over and regrettably broke his neck at nearly 7 years of age! Just how great a loss the untimely death of Caletto II was , has been shown by the fact that he was ranked 16th in the standings for ten consecutive years, with his two megastar offspring, Operette La Silla and Jewel's Classic Touch contributing the bulk of the points. Calletto II's son Caretino jumped internationally with Bo Kristoffersen and later with Ludger Beerbaum.  The Holsteiner Stallion Caretino is also the dam sire of Candillo Junior as well as the sire of Cheenook who is the sire of the stamm 18B1 Holsteiner mare Meggie.

Sacramento Song xx

The stallion Sacramento Song xx, serviced for 7 seasons as a private stallion in Holstein. Prevailing thinking is that he was not used for breeding often enough and today it is obvious he is viewed as one of the best sires of show jumpers in Holstein since the war. In spite of a very limited number of off-spring, 40 jumpers were successful up to the highest classes, among them exceptional horses such as Societe (D. Hafemeister, Nelson Pessoa), San Siro (G. Muller, winnings over 30,000 DM) or, of course, Sandro himself (F. Sloothaak, winnings over 50,000 DM to 1989).  Sacramento Song lives on and daily grows more influential in both dressage and jumper breeding. He was a classically bred English Thoroughbred, who stood in Holstein from 1973 until his early death in 1979. Sacramento Song is described in Dr. Dietrich Rossow's Stallion Book of the Holsteiner Warmblood Breed as: "A classically bred, English Thoroughbred, with beautiful, smoothly harmonious topline. Beautiful head, rather low set on neck, impressive shoulder with good coupling to the croup. Well muscled, strong legs and feet, sufficient gaits. Tremendous jumping ability, very tight with front end and good with knees." Dr Rossow was of the opinion that he bred: ‘Very good temperaments, keen, energetic dispositions... Top jumper sire!’ Alas as a private stallion he was only sparingly used by the Holstein breeders to their later regret. By 1990 with progeny earnings of DM696,000 he was the 8th most successful post-war Thoroughbred sire in Germany! Sacramento Song had 31 competitors with placings, 29 of which were showjumpers. After his death three exceptional sons were licensed on the grounds of their competition results: Sympatico, Sacramento Son and Sandro, sire of the Hanoverian stallion San Ramiro.
